Kitchen gardens create safety

Thanks to the support of Caritas , Florence Kahindo Kasonia (52) has transformed her life and secured food and income for her family through a sustainable kitchen garden.

Florence Kahindo Kasonia (52) lives in DR Congo with her six children, and through training in sustainable agriculture and access to seeds from Caritas , created a kitchen garden that provides both food security and security for her family. In her garden, onions, leeks and potatoes grow, and the surplus from the production she can sell at the market and cover other needs, such as school supplies and salt. Her efforts have not only changed her own life, but also helped to combat malnutrition in the local community. " Caritas "Gives us seeds that help us produce more food. We can not only meet our own needs, but also help others," Florence says proudly.

In 2022, Florence received a goat through a rotating credit program. This goat gave her the opportunity to start animal husbandry, and with the manure from the animals, she has managed to improve both soil quality and crop yields.

Florence faces challenges from climate change, with drought and heavy rains threatening crops, but with support from Caritas she has learned to make biofertilizer that protects the plants. “Despite climate change, biofertilizer helps us keep the crops healthy,” she says hopefully.

Caritas has launched several important initiatives to help farmers like Florence meet the challenges of climate change. Introducing agroecological trees to be planted by 2027 and training in the use of bio-fertilizers ensure that small farmers can continue to grow food and create a stable future for their families.

Florence has not only created a secure future for her own children, but has also become a shining example for other farmers in the area. Her efforts have inspired others to start their own kitchen gardens, and together they are building a stronger, more self-sufficient community. This journey from hopelessness to strength wouldn't have been possible without the support and training provided by Caritas and Florence is very grateful for everything Caritas has done for her and her family.
