The peace program was crucial for Myriam

In the mountains that follow the Neiva River lies Algeciras – known as the “ kitchen of Huila” . An area rich in natural resources and agricultural traditions, permeated by the scent of Colombian coffee. But the internal armed conflict has left deep traces in the local community.

In the center, in the Palacio area, lives Myriam Moreno. She was born in Ortega, Tolima, but has lived in Algeciras since she was three years old.

“I'm from Algeciras,” she says proudly. Today, she is a housewife and an active leader in the local community.

In 2021, Myriam was invited by friends at church to participate in activities through the peace program of Caritas Colombia. She remembers well how it all began.

– At first I was shy and afraid to speak. But little by little I learned, participated more – and became confident.

Myriam married very young and had six children. The marriage was marked by violence, and she was not allowed to participate in the community, work or make her own decisions. After 21 years, she made a brave choice. She left her husband and began to support the children alone – including through hard work on various farms.

Involving the daughter in the work

The peace program has been crucial for Myriam. She herself says:

– This process has allowed me to feel heard, share experiences and learn from others. It has strengthened my desire to contribute to peace in the local community.

Where she previously did not dare to speak, she is now a clear voice. At 62, she actively participates in various initiatives and has become a key leader in several projects.

She shares her lessons with Emilia and brings her to meetings, so that the next generation can also grow through safety and participation.

Dreams for the future

For Myriam, peacemaking means contributing with respect, love and active listening. She is part of the committee behind the Festival for Life and Peace . This is an initiative that showcases Algeciras as more than a conflict zone, and a place full of life, community and valuable people.

She dreams of a local community characterized by peace, opportunities and well-being for everyone.

Although her home has challenges with water and electricity supply, she is grateful to have a place to live. She dreams of a house surrounded by animals. Emilia dreams of developing a productive project – inspired by the workshops of Caritas Colombia – which she will one day pass on to her grandmother, so that Myriam can become self-sufficient.

Peace and quiet

It has been a long process to heal the wounds of a life of violence and displacement. But today Myriam describes herself as a happy and peaceful woman. She has regained the voice, freedom and self-confidence that were once taken from her.

– This process can be summed up in two words. Peace and quiet. It has allowed me to express myself, feel heard and appreciated. For that I am deeply grateful.
