Got my dream job after a year as a volunteer at Caritas

As a volunteer at Caritas Resource centers provide real work experience that increases the chances of a permanent job. Erlend Falck is a good example of this.
After several years of unemployment and a strong desire to work as a supervisor, he was advised by NAV to contact Caritas It was the start of 13 months as a volunteer at the Resource Center where he had the opportunity to contribute to the guidance service. But it was also the start of a new path into working life.
To be a volunteer at Caritas not only gave me valuable experience – it also gave me a sense of purpose and accomplishment. I took the role seriously and treated it like a job. I was among the first to arrive in the morning and the last to leave in the afternoon. I took responsibility, helped other volunteers and learned a huge amount about communication, collaboration and meeting people with different backgrounds and needs.

Security and self-confidence
During the time at Caritas Erlend was also given responsibility for hepatitis B/C testing, and developed skills that became crucial when he applied for a new job.
– The ability to adapt communication, remain calm in demanding situations and show confidence and self-confidence – all of this helped make me an attractive candidate, says Erlend.
Today he works at the reception desk at Self-Help for Immigrants and Refugees (SEIF) where he welcomes help seekers, answers phones and provides simple guidance.
– I enjoy myself incredibly well, and the working environment is the best I have ever experienced. Through two rounds of interviews, I was able to showcase both my knowledge and personality – and it was clear that the experience from Caritas made an impression.
At the same time, he is keen to emphasize:
– Caritas gave me the opportunity, but it was my own efforts that made me move forward. I highly recommend others to volunteer with Caritas – but with a clear call. Look at it as a job. Be motivated, dedicated and willing to learn. Listen to the experienced, and show that you take responsibility. Then volunteering can become a stepping stone to permanent employment – just like it did for me.
