A fight for light amidst the darkness

In the West Bank village of Deir Gazzala, 28-year-old Yasmine lives with her husband, Yousef, and their newborn son, Bassem, who is named after Yasmine's grandfather. Until October 2023, Yousef worked in Israel, providing the family with a stable income. But with the sudden closure of the borders, this young family has lost their main source of income. The life they had built together is now marked by uncertainty and the struggle to meet the most basic needs. 

"We got married and built our home with our own hands," says Yasmine. But the dream of a secure future has faded. The family is about 59,000 kroner in debt, but without income it is impossible to repay. Everyday life has become a constant struggle. "We have stopped living," says Yasmine. "I only buy the bare necessities."

The economic crisis in the West Bank is not just a statistic. It is written in the stories of people like Yasmine, who, despite the challenges, dream of building a better future for their family. Yasmine studied fashion and design at university and dreams of buying a sewing machine to support her family. “I want to create something of my own and at the same time give Bassem a better future,” she says. 

The humanitarian crisis in Gaza and the West Bank is worsening with each passing day. Caritas works closely with rural communities to develop sustainable solutions, help families get back on their feet, and defend their rights. Without sources of income and with a wave of harassment from settlers, daily life becomes a struggle.
