– Adult education has been a great blessing.

Rose fled the brutal war in South Sudan, a conflict that has claimed the lives of many of her relatives. She now lives in the Bidibidi refugee settlement in Uganda. She lives here with her husband and children. She did not speak English, so communicating with the rest of the population proved very challenging.

Many refugees arriving in Bidibidi cannot read, write or do math. They come from countries with poor educational opportunities, and may have never been to school. This has major consequences for their daily lives, and their ability to work and run businesses effectively.

According to the UN education agency, the lack of education leads to widespread poverty worldwide. Caritas Uganda has initiated adult education for those who cannot read and write in Bidibidi to address this problem. The education also includes a basic level of mathematics, so that they can effectively calculate, pay, and sell. For Rose, the adult education has been a great blessing.

"When I heard about the adult education program for Caritas "I signed up for Uganda immediately. There are big language barriers in the settlement, and we needed a common language. Now I can talk to my neighbors, write my name, and be understood. I can even explain myself to the doctor if I'm sick," she says.

Now Rose has fewer challenges than she did before. Now that she can write her name, she has easier access to food at distribution points. “I can sign and answer basic questions at distribution points and in hospitals. That makes me very happy,” she says.

To increase the literary level in Bidibidi, Caritas donated notebooks, pens, crayons, reading books, whiteboards, and markers to support learning. Students can attend classes three times a week, from 2 to 4 p.m., and have well-trained teachers.

"To practice reading, I use books Caritas has given us. If it is too difficult, I will look through the pictures to gain a greater understanding. I would like to thank Caritas for this golden opportunity to be able to study. My husband is extremely proud of me because I can now express myself in English”

Rose's dream is to complete level 5 in English and start university. She hopes this will increase her job opportunities since she can now read and write.
