Brenda's story

"I am incredibly grateful and happy to be part of this program"

Brenda is from Honduras. At 15, she had her first child, and at 17, she traveled to El Salvador in an attempt to find work. She grew up in extreme poverty. She had no toys or shoes, and she had to drop out of school after the 6th grade.

"My parents were very poor. We lived in a small wooden house and slept on simple benches," she says. "My father was an alcoholic, and died when he was 35 years old. Despite this, he taught me a lot. He taught me to sew, cook, and collect firewood. I am very happy about that."

"When I was little, I had to help out a lot at home after school. My mother had recently given birth, so I was responsible for cooking for the whole family."

Brenda is now 30 years old and a single mother of 3 children. One is 15, one is 10, and one is 2. Her oldest son works to help support the family.

Her greatest wish is for her children to have an easier life than she has lived.

Before her youngest child was born, she traveled extensively between Honduras and El Salvador for work. She could be away from her children for months at a time. Her mother helped raise the children.

After the last birth, she could no longer travel for work. She had to take out a loan to pay for the house they live in, so she owed a lot of money.

Brenda has received help from Caritas Norway through her local Caritas -organization.

Caritas Its work in Honduras has four overarching goals:

1. Ensure access to food and improve nutrition.
2. Ensure that small farmers receive higher wages and easier access to markets.
3. Increased climate resistance and strengthened resilience to climate change.
4. Strengthening civil society and advocacy with a focus on strengthening the position of women.
