A new home after a long journey

Nyamojwok is a young, pregnant woman from Khartoum, Sudan, who fled war and conflict to South Sudan with her daughter Gimsa on her back. When the bombs fell on the capital, she quickly started packing what she could carry. They didn't have time to look for her husband. She had to get her daughter to safety as quickly as possible.
What lay ahead of them now was two months of flight, first on foot, then by car, and finally by boat as they crossed the Nile to arrive in South Sudan. She was exhausted, but refused to give up. All she thought about was the safety that awaited her on the other side of the river.
The war in Sudan has been raging for almost three years and has triggered the world's largest refugee crisis. More than half the population is starving. Many South Sudanese who once fled to Sudan are now returning. A large number of these are children without parents or caregivers.
Nyamojwok has been luckier than most. She has an aunt in Kodok who herself has been through the long flight from Sudan. The aunt took her and her daughter into her home. They live in a small house with a hole in the roof and no outside door. They have no clean water, protection from the elements or mosquito nets to protect them from malaria. The aunt sleeps by the door to protect the family from intruders and thieves. Nyamojwok describes her as a mother lioness protecting her pride.
Caritas Norway is assisting people like Nyamojwok, Gimsa and the aunt through local partners in South Sudan. We are contributing with life-saving emergency response such as cash transfers, ensuring access to drinking water and other essentials, and providing psychosocial support and protection to survivors of sexual violence. We distribute seeds and provide training in nutrition and agriculture, so that families can grow their own food. They also receive access to and training in the use of clean-burning stoves for cooking.
