Workers from EU EEA countries

  • Registration certificate
    You must have a registration certificate
    If you are going to be in Norway for more than 3 months, you must register and get a registration certificate from the police.
  • Tax card
    You must have a tax card.
    A tax card shows your employer how much tax is to be deducted from your salary. To get a tax card for the first time, you must make an appointment with the Norwegian Tax Administration. When your application for a tax card has been processed, you will receive a letter showing how much tax you will have to pay. Your employer will retrieve your tax card online.
    If you do not automatically receive a new tax card next year, you must apply for a tax card online.
  • Report a move
    You must report your move.
    If you are going to be in Norway for more than 6 months, you must notify the Norwegian Tax Administration of your move when you show up for your appointment. If the notification of your move is approved, you will be registered as a resident of Norway and will receive a personal identification number in the mail.
  • Identity number
    You must have an identity number.
    Everyone who works in Norway must have a Norwegian identity number (D-number or personal identification number).
    If you are going to be in Norway for less than 6 months, you will receive a D-number when you apply for a tax card. If you are going to be in Norway for more than 6 months and are registered as a resident, you will receive a personal identification number in the mail.
  • Pay taxes
    You must choose how you want to pay taxes.
    As a foreign worker in Norway, you can choose between two different ways to pay tax: simplified tax scheme and ordinary tax scheme . There can be a big difference in how much tax you have to pay under the two tax schemes. You must check for yourself which way is best for you.
  • Electronic user
    You should become an electronic user.
    Being an electronic user means that you can log in to public websites to use their services. You can, among other things, check your tax return, change your address and order certificates online. You will also receive your tax return and tax settlement faster. If you are going to be in Norway for less than 6 months, you will receive help to become an electronic user when you meet with the Norwegian Tax Administration to apply for a tax card. If you are going to be in Norway for more than 6 months, you must become an electronic user yourself after you have received your personal identification number in the mail. Do not share your login information with others

Workers from countries outside the EU EEA

  • Identity number
    Everyone who works in Norway must have a Norwegian identity number (D-number or personal identification number). When you receive a residence permit, the UDI notifies the Norwegian Tax Administration that you need an identity number.
    If you are going to be in Norway for less than 6 months, you will receive a D-number in the mail.
    If you are going to be in Norway for more than 6 months, the Norwegian Tax Administration will consider whether you should be registered as a resident in Norway, based on the type of residence permit you have. If you are registered as a resident, you will receive a personal identification number in the mail.
  • Electronic user
