A severe earthquake has struck Myanmar, in an area already affected by conflict
On March 28, 2025, Myanmar experienced a powerful earthquake measuring 7.7 on the Richter scale followed by four aftershocks ranging from 4.5 to 6.6.
The epicenter was located in the Sagaing region of central Myanmar. According to the USGS, the earthquake triggered a red alert, indicating a high risk of death and economic losses. Estimates of the number of deaths range from 100 to 10,000, and economic losses could reach up to 70% of Myanmar's GDP.
The military regime in Myanmar has declared a state of emergency in several regions, including Sagaing, Mandalay, Magway, Eastern Shan, Naypyidaw and Bago. The international community has been called upon to provide humanitarian aid. Hundreds are feared dead, and hospitals are overwhelmed. Communication disruptions are hampering rescue efforts
