– A serious attack on democracy

Caritas Norway is concerned after the attack on Colombian presidential candidate Miguel Uribe Turbay. The attack occurred during a campaign rally in Bogotá on June 7.
– This is not just an attack on one politician – it is an attack on democracy in Colombia, says Secretary General Ingrid Rosendorf Joys.
– If this marks a return to political violence, much is at stake for peace and reconciliation in the country.
Caritas Norway has been involved in peace and reconciliation work in Colombia for a number of years, and cooperates closely with Caritas Colombia – a key player in civil society. The organization has supported both national peace negotiations and local initiatives to promote dialogue, justice, and the protection of vulnerable groups.
"We fear that the attack will weaken the already fragile trust in the peace agreements with the FARC and the ongoing processes with the ELN and other armed groups. The Colombian people deserve security and democratic frameworks - not a relapse into the logic of violence," says Joys.
Caritas Norway will follow developments closely, support our partners in the country and strengthen efforts for democratic participation and non-violent solutions.
– We stand in solidarity with the Colombian people. Guns can never be an acceptable response to political disagreement.
